The Patterns You Keep Repeating May Not Have Started With You

Have you ever caught yourself reacting in a way that doesn’t quite feel like you?

Maybe you shut down when someone gets too close. Maybe you overwork because slowing down feels unsafe. Maybe you pride yourself on being the strong one, the capable one, the one who never needs help. Or perhaps you’ve spent years understanding your patterns, reading the books, listening to the podcasts, going to therapy, and yet somehow you still find yourself returning to the same familiar ways of being.

If that feels true, I want to offer you a different possibility.

What if the pattern isn’t your identity?

What if it’s something you inherited?

In my recent conversation with spiritual neuroscientist Dr. Jasmine Escalera, we explored the profound intersection of generational healing, inherited trauma, epigenetics, nervous system regulation, and conscious choice. While these words can sound academic, what they point toward is deeply human.

Many of us are living by rules we never consciously chose.

Rules that were passed down through stories, silence, nervous systems, survival strategies, and the emotional atmosphere of the homes we grew up in.

The women in your family may have taught you that love means self-sacrifice.

The men in your family may have learned that vulnerability is dangerous.

Perhaps achievement became your way of earning safety. Maybe hyper-independence became your definition of strength.

None of these patterns make you broken.

They simply reveal what helped the generations before you survive.

The beautiful part is that survival doesn’t have to become your destiny.

One of the ideas Dr. Jasmine shared that stayed with me is that awareness is only the beginning. So many people become experts in explaining their wounds. They can tell you exactly why they struggle, where it came from, and who influenced them.

But awareness, by itself, doesn’t create freedom.

Embodiment does.

Freedom begins the moment you notice the familiar impulse arise and choose something different.

Not because you’re forcing yourself to become someone else.

Because you’re finally allowing yourself to become who you’ve always been beneath the inherited conditioning.

That distinction changes everything.

Throughout our conversation, we spoke about hyper-independence, a pattern that so many high-achieving leaders carry without realizing it. It often looks like competence. Reliability. Success. Being the person everyone can count on.

Yet underneath that strength is often a nervous system that quietly believes, “No one is coming.”

If you’ve ever found it difficult to receive support, rest, love, or even a compliment, this may not simply be your personality.

It may be a pattern your body learned long before you had language for it.

The invitation isn’t to reject your family or blame the generations that came before you.

It’s to understand them with enough compassion that you no longer have to become them.

One of my favorite moments in the conversation came when Jasmine offered three simple questions that can begin opening entirely new possibilities:

What do I truly want to experience in this lifetime?

What might I be doing that keeps me from experiencing it?

Where did I learn that?

These questions are powerful because they move us beyond blame and into agency.

They invite us to recognize that our unconscious isn’t a prison. It’s a garden.

Every day, through the environments we choose, the conversations we have, the boundaries we create, and the ways we learn to regulate our nervous system, we plant new seeds.

That is what embodiment looks like.

Not becoming perfect.

Not erasing your history.

Not pretending the past didn’t happen.

It is choosing, over and over again, to participate in creating a different future.

Because while you may have inherited the pattern, you are not required to pass it on.

That is where generational healing begins.

If this conversation resonates with you, I hope you’ll listen to the full episode with Dr. Jasmine Escalera. My intention isn’t simply to help you understand yourself more deeply. It’s to help you move from awareness into embodiment, because that’s where your freedom lives.

If this conversation stirred something in you, don’t let it become another insight you leave at the level of understanding.

Real transformation happens when awareness is lived, practiced, and embodied.

If you’re at a point in your life where you know you’re ready to stop repeating inherited patterns and begin creating from a deeper place of agency, I’d love to support you.

Book a private introductory call, and together we’ll explore where you are, what’s asking to emerge in this next season of your life, and whether working together is the right fit.

Your next chapter doesn’t begin by becoming someone new. It begins by remembering who you are beneath everything you’ve inherited.
